San Marino coins catalog and price guide
San Marino is located on the Apennine
Peninsula and is surrounded on all sides by Italian territory.
The country's population is about 30 thousand people - it is one
of the smallest countries in the world.
Within its current borders, San Marino is the oldest state in
Europe. The formal date of its foundation is considered to be
September 3, 301.
In 855, San Marino became independent, leaving the protectorate
of the neighboring
Duchy of Urbino. The heads of state were two
captain-regents, elected for six months. This allows us to
consider San Marino the oldest republic on Earth.
The Republic escaped the unification of the Italian
principalities in the 15th century and the unification of the
country into a single state in the 19th century, thanks to its
remote position in the Apennine Mountains.
