State of Katanga (1961-1963)
Katanga is the Congo's most mineral-rich
region.
General elections were held in the spring of 1960, shortly
before Congo's independence. Nationally, only 5.8% of the
electorate voted for CONACAT (Confederation of Katanga Tribal
Associations). However, in the provincial assembly of Katanga,
CONAKAT won 25 out of 70 mandates.
On June 30, 1960, the independence of the Republic of Congo was
declared.
On July 11, 1960, Moise Chombe announced the secession of
Katanga Province from the Republic of Congo and the
establishment of the independent State of Katanga. The territory
of the self-proclaimed republic was about 1/5th of Congo and the
population about 13% of the then population of the whole
country.
To suppress Katanga separatism, Congolese President Patrice
Lumumba requested UN military support. Lumumba was captured by
the separatists and executed, with high-ranking Katanga leaders
directly involved. This event largely determined the perception
of the Katanga conflict by the world community and on February
21, 1961 the UN Security Council adopted a resolution.
Attempts to settle the conflict through negotiations were
unsuccessful. The Katanga War began.
Military operations were carried out with varying success,
despite the clear advantage of international forces over the
Katanga separatist formations. In December 1962, UN troops
finally took control of Elisabethville. On January 15, 1963, the
Katanga forces ended their resistance.
