Canton of Lucerne in the Swiss Confederation (1332-1848)
The monastery of St. Leodegar im Gough was
founded at the beginning of the 8th century. A village grew up
around the bridge over the Rois River leading to the monastery.
The year of foundation of Lucerne is considered to be 1178, when
this settlement ceased to be completely dependent on the
monastery.
In 1220, the Saint Gotthard Pass was opened, which served as an
impetus for the development of the city. A fortress wall with
towers was erected.
In the 14th century, as self-government developed, Lucerne
became a city-state, one of the founders of the Old Swiss
Confederation.
At the end of the 18th century, power in the city belonged to
patrician families.
In 1843, Lucerne led the Sonderbund (unification of Catholic
cantons), which was defeated in 1847. In 1848, residents voted
against the federal constitution, greatly weakening the city's
political influence.
